Becoming a Natural in Front of the Lens

I'm beginning to think that being 'naturally photogenic' is a state of mind. That's a bold statement coming from a photographer, I know. Sure, there are people that are strikingly beautiful, but sometimes they can be the most awkward in front of the camera. Actually, I don't really love being in front of the camera myself. So, how do we fix that? Inevitably times will come where we'll need our photo taken (especially on those important occasions like engagements and weddings).  Below are a few tips for feeling less like a gremlin and more like the shining unicorn that you are in front of the camera. 

Comfort

If you know you're being photographed ahead of time, choose a comfortable setting and clothing to match. Choose an clothing that makes you feel like yourself. Comfort doesn't have to mean casual, but it can! Talk with your photographer about doing a home session. Those are some of my favorite sessions, because the client is most often more relaxed in their own element. 

Confidence

I love this quote by Anne Lamott. It's true! The best way to look good while being photographed is to be confident. It definitely translates on camera. Take a look in the mirror. Instead of picking out the flaws (which is so easy to do), highlight the things that you love about yourself, the things that make you you. Own it. If I think of those who inspire me most, it is always their peace and sense of self that is most empowering

Reflect

Sometimes when I'm feeling a little hard on myself, I'll scroll through some old photos on social media. I'll stroll down memory lane and remember all those sweet times and see myself how I was back then. Usually I'll end up thinking, 'why was I so hard on myself? I looked great!' and try to remember the same is true for now. 

We are beautiful in this season. Whether that's feeling and looking your best today or carrying an extra 20 pounds because you're growing a human. Wherever you might be today, remember you are the only you. Be gracious to yourself. We have the potential to be something beautiful and miraculous on this earth.

How To Choose Your Wedding Photographer

You're engaged! You're in love! The world is at yours!  

And you are going to throw a marvelous party with all your friends and family. 

Wait, how many people is that? And how much will all this cost? Does Great Aunt Ursula really need to be there? 

It can get overwhelming--even when you try to keep it modest. Somehow I thought that planning my "simple" wedding would be easy like Sunday morning. Actually, it turned out to be more like a Monday. Even though we kept it simple, I still wasn't excused from figuring out things like how many napkins we needed.

The same goes for choosing your wedding photographer. 

After meeting with many couples, I find most of them are pretty unsure about choosing a photographer (especially for their wedding). But I'm here to help you narrow down your choices on a choosing a wedding photographer. 

Style 

Whose work are you attracted to? Does fine art photography best describe your day or a more photojournalistic approach? Wedding photography can range from straight-out-of-camera to moody, high contrast photos and everywhere in between. So it's important to do your research! Check hashtags like #weddingphotographer on Instagram or explore Pinterest for ideas.

Price

So, you found a few photographers that meet your style. Now what about price? Everyone has a different budget, so there are no wrong answers. However, you usually get what you pay for. If your budget is tiny, ask a friend or relative to help out in documenting your day. If you're able to budget for a photographer, choose one you love. They have an important job! Event planners, florists and musicians are all only serving you for one day-- your photographer's images are what will last for years to come. 

The 'Fit'

Maybe now you've narrowed down your choices to a few photographers that meet your style and price. The 'fit' is a super important part of the process. Read your photographer's 'About' section on their website or blog. Email with them. Set up a coffee date. Get to know your potential photographer. You want them to feel like the perfect fit for your wedding day. Getting photographed is vulnerable and intimate. You want to choose someone you're comfortable with to photograph you while you're living out one of your most important, heart-on-your-sleeve days.

Hello Again!

Oh hey there! 

This is my first post since almost a year ago. Time, you sneaky thief! To put you up to speed, we had baby! Amos Rainer, now 5 months old and soaking up all our love.

After taking some time to pray about it, I stepped away from my photography business indefinitely. Growing a baby and then taking care of a newborn + two-year-old has proven to keep me pretty busy and I wanted to give them my full attention. But I am so excited to announce that I'll be returning back to photography! I'm so excited to connect with people through this passion so close to my heart.
